SALINE, MI - Residents in some parts of Saline can soon convert garages or repurpose parts of their homes for use as accessory apartments, a step city leaders say could help expand options for older family members who want to age in place and diversify housing in the city.

The Saline City Council voted unanimously to approve changes to city zoning rules allowing accessory dwelling units in limited areas on Monday, Aug. 7, after months of consideration. ADUs are self-contained living spaces on the same lot as someone’s home, with separate entrances and dedicated amenities, like bathrooms and kitchens.
