SOUTHWICK – With the town’s population getting older, the town has been working toward being designed as a Dementia Friendly Community.

“It’s happening, but it’s been slow so far,” said Cindy Sullivan, the town’s director or senior and recreational operations about meeting the criteria for the designation.

Dementia-friendly communities address the needs specific to their residents advocating for dementia awareness and providing services, programs, and public spaces that support people with dementia and their care partners, according to the Dementia Friendly America Massachusetts, which is an initiative of the state’s Councils on Aging.
